Uprooting your life by changing locations can be daunting. Moving can be overwhelming, whether it is from an apartment or a house. Sometimes moves are unavoidable, but it does not need to be stressful. Here are 5 tips for a stress-free move.

1. Be Organized
Relocating, whether it is down the street, cross country, or across the world, requires careful planning and organization. You’ll need checklists and a place to keep track of valuable information and paperwork so that things do not fall through the cracks.

For example, keep a checklist of services and utilities that you need to cancel and set up. This list may include Internet, telephone, cable, electricity, and gas. Be sure to record the date that you tackled the item, in case you need to reference it later.

2. Condense Your Possessions
Consider every move to be an opportunity to clean out your closet and think about the things you own. Remember, you only have a limited number of moving boxes and a limited amount of space in the moving truck. Whatever you haven’t used in the last year, consider selling, donating, or throwing it away.

3. Pack Smart
Realistically, you will not be able to unpack all your boxes at the same time. Therefore, always label your boxes on all four sides because you never know how which side will be visible at any given time. Proper labels will also help movers place the boxes in the appropriate room. That way, you won’t find your dishes in the bedroom. Additionally, label important boxes as “Unpack First.” These boxes may include living essentials, such as bed sheets, towels, shower curtains, one or two clean sets of clothes, and essential cookware.

4. Use the Right Materials
Boxes, newspapers, and bubble wrap are usually sufficient to secure most items. However, for particularly fragile items, invest in special boxes and paper for transport. Don’t forget to wrap the furniture in plastic wrap or blankets to prevent scratches and dents.  Sealed storage bags, like Ziplock, are incredibly helpful for preventing messes and for organizing smaller items. For example, put dry goods like flour and sugar into sizeable sealed storage bags and loose items like magnets and paperclips into smaller airtight storage bags.

Additionally, if you are moving out an apartment, you may need to inform your building’s superintendent or caretaker of your moving day. They will likely put up elevator pads that protect both the elevator and your furniture from damage.

5. Get Help
Whether you hire professional packers or do the entire move yourself, don’t forget to ask for help. Every extra set of hands can speed up the process by delegating the work load, meaning one less trip back and forth.
